Congratulations to all Halls...

It’s finally May! This is our final Sustainable Halls article for the academic year, so we’re here to give you the final scores on the Sustainable Halls competition, plus give you some tips to help you get settled into your new accommodation next year.

The Results!

We’re pleased to announce that Crown Place are the winners of this year’s Sustainable Halls competition! This is thanks to all the events they have attended, quizzes they’ve taken part in, and how well they’ve recycled in their kitchens. Congratulations to them, and well done to everyone else, especially Melville Grove who came a very close second. Here are the final results:

1st Place: Crown Place

2nd Place: Melville Grove

3rd Place: Tudor Close

4th Place: Greenbank

5th Place: Philharmonic Court

6th Place: Dover Court

7th Place: Vine Court

Crown's prize will be available in reception from 2pm on Friday 8th May! Crown residents - take a revision break and grab a summer smoothie, ice lolly and fair trade chocolate 💚

Moving out – Leave Liverpool Tidy!

May marks the launch of our annual Leave Liverpool Tidy project. It’s our way of helping you to get rid of all sorts of things you don’t want any more and ensuring they go to a good cause.

You'll soon be able to donate everything in the picture below in your hall’s reception.

Donations go to British Heart Foundation and FareShare Merseyside. Last year we collected 1,494 bags of donations, diverting 12 tonnes of items from being thrown away and raising £17,175. We also collected 2166 meals worth of food. Donated pots, pans, cutlery, plates and glasses will be given back to students during our free shop at the start of the next academic year.

You can also donate books at the Guild’s book swap in the first-floor rotunda or in the libraries, and tech (phones, laptops, tablets, etc.) can be donated at Guild reception.

We know you’ve got a lot to think about this month without considering planning your move-out, but the earlier you get started, the better! Planning your move-out early saves you time and stress on the day, and it also gives you the chance to decide what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of for next year.

For all information about Leave Liverpool Tidy, take a look at the LLT page on the Guild website. If you’re interested in volunteer work, we’ll also have some opportunities for you to help with the project, so keep an eye on that page for more details coming soon!

Tips for next year

Transport

If you’re moving out of halls and a bit farther from campus, you might be wondering how to get to uni. Here are some suggestions:

Walking: For those of you living in Kensington or in private halls in the city centre, walking is the way to go. Not only is it great for your health and for the planet, but it doesn’t cost anything!

Bus: Living on Smithdown Road? The student bus pass available from the Guild shop is an affordable way to get to campus, and you can use it on any Arriva bus in the Liverpool City Region too!

Cycling: Even cheaper than the bus pass is hiring a bike from the Guild’s LivCycle programme! For just £60, plus a refundable £50 deposit, you’ll be able to hire a bike for the full academic year. You’ll also receive free tune-ups and minor repairs from the team at the Bikiosk throughout your hire period.

Waste

Your bins might not look the same in your new accommodation, so it’s a good idea to get familiarised as soon as you move in so you can start off on the right track.

If you’ll be living in a house, check out the council website’s recycling page.

If you’re moving to private halls, check out their website or get in contact with them, as they should be able to help you get familiar with your new bins.

Thanks for reading!

We hope you’ve enjoyed all the events, articles, quizzes and more from the Sustainable Halls programme this year. Thanks to all of you who took part, and best of luck in your sustainability journey!
