Sustainable living can mean so many things but often it starts with those small, everyday actions. Our catering teams are here to make those steps much easier when comes to eating and drinking in our cafés across campus.
From discounted drinks to water refills and recycling, here's how we can work together across our cafés so you can make every bite count 🌎
Make your money go further 🫰
Earn points by spending in campus cafés and outlets! Get more value for the money you spend by earning rewards with the Loyalty Plus app. Benefit from discounts when using your topped up balance from the app e.g. enjoy every 9th hot drink for free or 10% off hot drinks.
Grabbing a coffee from a café on campus? Bring a reusable cup with you for 25p off your drink.
Refill 💦
Taking your reusable cup on campus won't only get you money off hot drinks but will also mean you can refill between classes, saving both money and plastic on buying water bottles.
Use the Refill App to search for the nearest cold water refill station or pop along to:
- Chapter Café (Sydney Jones Library)
- Bio Science Café
- Mailard Reaction Café (Chemistry)
- Law and Social Justice Café
- Leahurst Café
Know you've bought local 🍅
Whenever you buy spend on in a campus café, you can do so knowing that we've worked with local suppliers who provide locally sourced ingredients. To save on energy, transport and storage, our outlets prioritise for local, seasonally available ingredients.
Our go-to coffee order 🍵
Good to know! Coffee and tea serve on campus are provided by suppliers with Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance accreditation.
Here on the Halls Life team, we LOVE a Grumpy Mule coffee (latte or an oat milk flat white is our go-to order) at the Courtyard! It's always served with a smile from the team and we can enjoy in knowing it's responsibly roasted - win, win! 💜
Look after your health ❤️🩹
Juggling university life can make eating a balanced diet that bit trickier, we totally get it!
Don't worry, you'll find lots of options on our menus across campus for nutritional, filling dishes made with fresh ingredients.
Good to know! The Courtyard at the Guild of Student serves delicious overnight oats and granola boxes for the perfect way to fuel your day. You'll also find fresh build-your-own salad bars, perfect for the spring and summer time 🌞
Conscious about waste 🗑️
As part of the uni's sustainability strategy, our outlets are making conscious decisions to make for a more sustainable and ethical service.
Here's just a few more ways our outlets are making conscious choices:
➡️ Waste oil from VG&M Waterhouse Café, Bertie & Bella's and The Courtyard is sent away to create high quality biofuels for transport
➡️ The take-away containers, cups and cutlery you find in campus outlets are biodegradable
➡️ Wherever possible, you'll find multi-portion sauce bottles rather than individual, plastic sauce sachets
➡️ Our teams work with suppliers to reduce packaging at source and try to make essential packaging recyclable
When you've tucked into your favourite bite to eat on campus, don't forget to check which bin you're throwing your waste in. You'll find food waste recycling and general waste bins around campus so you can get rid responsibly.
Our teams are working hard to reduce waste too! A total of 225.962 tonnes of food waste has been recycled since introducing the scheme in September 2023, up until end of March 2026. This food waste now goes for anaerobic digestion which then creates energy ⚡
